Norman Vincent Peale

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale (1898-1993) was the son of an Ohio minister who worked many different jobs to help support his family.  He was educated at Ohio Wesleyan University and Boston University and ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He changed his affiliation to the Dutch Reform Church and served the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City for 52 years.

Dr. Peale was the author of 40 books.  The Power of Positive Thinking sold over 20 million copies in 41 languages.  He and his wife founded the Guideposts magazine with circulation topping 4.5 million.

As a child, Dr. Peale’s father taught him the seven magic words: “I can do all things through Christ”.  His message of positive thinking was another term for faith.  He taught that the power of the Holy Spirit is within you to transform your goals into realities through Christ.  His books are filled with many examples of human experiences overcoming difficulties though faith in Christ, enthusiasm, positive thinking and positive imaging.

His books are not only worth the first reading but also a frequent review of his stories and examples of positive experiences to help you to live a positive life through Christ.

Robert H. Schuller

Robert H. Schuller (1926 – Present) grew up on a small Iowa farm.  He studied at Hope College, received his master of divinity degree from Western Theological Seminary in 1950, and was ordained as a minister in the Reform Church of America.

Schuller moved to California with $500 to start a new church in 1955.  He began his ministry at a drive-in theater, preaching from the roof of the snackshop.   Soon he built a 300 seat chapel near the theater and conducted two services each Sunday.  As the congregation grew he purchased 10 acres in Garden Grove California where he built a new church and later built the Crystal Cathedral in 1980.

Schuller also founded the Hour of Power, which became the most widely watched television church service all over the world.  Each Sunday, his service was attended by 10,000 persons in the Crystal Cathedral and watched by 2 million viewers on the Hour of Power.

Like Dr. Peale, Shuller’s message focused on the positive aspects of Christian life.  He believed that sowing seeds of faith encourages the individual to achieve great things through possibility thinking.  “If you believe it, you can do it.”

But after Robert H. Schuller retired, his family changed focus of his message and gradually lost the congregation and television audience driving the church into bankruptcy.

Robert H. Schuller wrote 37 inspirational hard cover books during his career.  Six of the books made the national best sellers list.  In his books, Schuller presents his message of possibility thinking as a solution to work through the many problems we face in life.  They are rich with real life examples of overcoming problems through positive faith.
